In Chinese culture, the ginkgo is a symbol of longevity, resilience, and eternal strength. Its fan-shaped leaves represent unity and the wish for a long and healthy life. The fish (yu) is a powerful symbol of abundance and prosperity—its name sounds like “surplus” (余), carrying the classic blessing of “may you have abundance year after year” (年年有余). The Ginkgo & Fish Motif: Golden ginkgo leaves and a graceful fish rendered through the art of Xiang embroidery. The ginkgo symbolizes longevity and resilience, while the fish represents abundance and prosperity—carrying the blessing of “longevity, abundance, and enduring prosperity.”

The Techniques:

• Xiang Embroidery: Originating from Hunan, Xiang embroidery is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and fine stitches. It is recognized as China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

• Canzhen (Blended Stitch): Creating soft, seamless color transitions that bring the ginkgo leaves and fish scales to life with depth and luminosity.

• Neat-Edge Stitch (Qibianzhen): Precisely outlining the ginkgo leaf veins and the fish‘s form with clean, crisp lines.
