Apsastitch

An Inch of Kesi, An Inch of Gold. A UNESCO Heritage at Your Lapel.

This is not just a brooch. It is a piece of world-class heritage from Apsastitch—a Kesi silk tapestry brooch that took 192 hours of handcrafting by a master artisan. Available in two elegant designs—Leaf and Butterfly—each brooch is created using the ancient art of Kesi (also known as "carved silk"), a technique so rare and precious that it has been called "an inch of Kesi, an inch of gold."

What is Kesi (缂丝)?

Kesi, also known as "carved silk," is the pinnacle of traditional Chinese silk weaving. Its defining technique is "Tong Jing Duan Wei" (通经断纬)—the warp threads run continuously through the entire piece, while the weft threads are woven only in the patterned areas, creating a raised, sculptural effect with identical patterns on both sides. This is why Kesi is known as the "Masterpiece of Weaving" (织中之圣).

In 2009, Chinese Kesi weaving was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—a globally recognized World Heritage craft. Historically, Kesi was reserved exclusively for imperial use, appearing only on dragon robes, imperial edicts, and the finest ceremonial garments.

Why "An Inch of Kesi, An Inch of Gold"?

  • Extreme Time: A skilled artisan can weave only 1–2 centimeters per day. A small piece like this brooch requires 3–7 days of pure weaving time—several times longer than ordinary embroidery.

  • Extreme Materials: Only the finest mulberry silk threads are used, with significant weft thread waste. Only artisans with over 10 years of experience can create masterpieces.

  • Extreme Scarcity: Fewer than a few hundred traditional Kesi artisans remain in China today. Each piece is naturally rare and highly collectible.

The Craftsmanship – A Harmony of Silk and Thread

The Techniques:

  • Kesi (Carved Silk): The pinnacle of Chinese silk weaving, known as the "Masterpiece of Weaving." Using the "Tong Jing Duan Wei" technique, patterns are raised and sculptural, with identical designs on both front and back.

  • Tong Jing Duan Wei (Warp-through, Weft-break): The defining technique of Kesi—warp threads run continuously while weft threads weave only in patterned areas.

The Materials:

  • Thread: Premium Mulberry Silk – renowned for its natural luster and vibrant color.

  • Hardware: Alloy (pin, clasp, decorative frame) – providing secure closure and a vintage aesthetic.
